Finalist in the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize 2025. “Metropolitan Man” investigates the intricate relationship between humanity and the constructed environment. Set along George Street, the artery of Sydney’s urban life, the cityscape warps and distorts as it converges toward a central figure—an embodiment of our surroundings bending and moulding to mankind's relentless drive to manipulate it. Using photo-realistic black and white charcoal on paper underscores the dramatic contrasts and tension between light and shadow, order and chaos within urban spaces. An obsession with detail reflects the broader human compulsion to exert control and achieve perfection within our internal and external environments. Rooted in a meditation practice where the inner world expands into an edgeless infinity, the meticulous drawing process becomes a contemplative action exploring psychological and physical space and boundaries. The inner black abyss and the external light-filled reality connect, allowing conscious awareness, the physical world and our desire to control it to intersect through drawing.
